How can it be that large pharmaceutical and biotech companies are facing an unprecedented need for products, while at the same time emerging companies with promising development programs face potential bankruptcy?

Due to the current global market environment, there is a shakeout coming to the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. There will be some winners and there will certainly be some losers. Companies with products with strong profiles in desirable therapeutic areas will see increased interest and licensing activity, and will be positioned to succeed. On the other side of the equation, companies that have products in less desirable categories and less favorable profiles—or an inability to concisely tell the value “story” around their products—will face troubled times, and quite possibly business failure.

During this session, senior business development executives from the buy-side will begin with a discussion of the current conflicting market pressures including upcoming patent exclusivity cliffs, the financial distress of emerging companies, and the competitive nature of certain therapeutic areas. The panel will conclude with an interactive discussion of the many things in-licensing companies are looking for in the current market environment.
