Is It a Diamond or a Dog?  Practical Considerations for Conducting Market Opportunity Assessments

In today’s highly competitive environment, licensing executives need to have a solid understanding of the potential market for a particular asset before executing a deal. Hear from experienced licensing executives about important practical considerations for conducting high-quality market opportunity assessments.

  •  Approach – How do licensing executives estimate the size of a given opportunity? Panelists will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of conducting opportunity assessments using a patient-based model vs. a script-based model.
  • Execution – What information is most important to collect? For what types of data do you depend on syndicated research vs. internal company expertise or physician market research?
  • Market Research – Is market research always needed? What are best practices for conducting market research?
    • Product Profile – When testing a product profile with physicians, what information is included? How long should a product profile be so that physicians will actually read it? 
    • Audience – How many physicians are typically interviewed for an opportunity assessment? Is it best to use key opinion leaders or community physicians?
    • Methodology – Are physician-reported adoption rates accepted at face value or are their responses adjusted?
  • Challenges – What information is most difficult to gather in conducting an opportunity assessment? What approaches can be used to avoid these challenges?
